Septic drain-field restoration in Lisbon, ND

The Sheyenne River valley, its bluffs, and the till plain on either side.

Lisbon sits where the Sheyenne River cuts down through the till plain, and that shapes the septic work here. Homes in the valley sit on layered river sediment that can be sandy in one spot and silty in the next, with the river and its floodplain close by. Up on the farmland, the ground is glacial till: a dense mix of clay, silt and stones that takes water slowly.

In that heavy till, a drain field depends on the soil staying open. Years of effluent build a biomat at the trench bottom, and tires and livestock pack the ground above. When the field starts surfacing or the house drains slow down, restoration is worth a look before anyone prices a new field.

Lisbon is a short drive west of our base in McLeod, so we’re in Ransom County regularly for drain fields, drainage and dirt work.

Sec. 02Lisbon questions

Asked around Lisbon.

Does a drain field in glacial till behave differently from one in sand?

Yes. Till holds water and passes it slowly, so it is more sensitive to compaction and biomat buildup. A field in till that has sealed up is a good candidate to evaluate for decompaction; a field in sand is more often limited by groundwater.

Who permits septic work in Ransom County?

North Dakota requires installers to get a permit from the local public health unit before working on a system. In Lisbon that’s Ransom County’s public health unit. Installers themselves are licensed by the ND Department of Environmental Quality.

Can you work on a property near the Sheyenne River floodplain?

We can evaluate it. A field that floods or sits in high groundwater during spring runoff has a water problem, not just a soil problem, and decompaction won’t fix that. We’ll tell you which one you have.
