Septic drain-field restoration

When a drain field fails, the tank and pipes are often fine. The problem is the soil: it packs down and a layer of biomat seals it until effluent can’t soak in. We use the patented EarthBuster Deep Soil Decompactor to drive a probe into the field and fracture that soil with compressed air, opening new channels for liquid and oxygen without trenching the yard. Where the soil needs more help, EarthBuster Plus injects Lenzyme treatments right where the biomat lives.

Sec. 02Step by step

What happens on a restoration job.

The EarthBuster drives its probe into the field’s absorption soil and delivers shots of compressed air at depth. The manufacturer describes probing up to six feet into a drain field; the air fractures packed soil and the biomat so liquid and oxygen can move through them again.

Signs it’s time to call

  • Wet or soggy ground over the drain field
  • Black or dark gray ooze surfacing in the yard
  • Foul odors around the drain field
  • Gurgling drains inside the house
  • Sewage backing up or overflowing into the house
  1. Look first

We talk through the symptoms, find the field and check whether the trouble is really the soil. A crushed pipe, a field sitting in groundwater or a system too small for the house won’t be fixed by restoration, and we’ll say so.

  2. Pump the tank

The septic tank is pumped by a licensed pumper before treatment, so the field isn’t fed fresh effluent while the soil is opened up.

  3. Probe and fracture

A steel probe mounted on our track loader is driven into the absorption soil along the field. At depth, shots of compressed air fracture the packed soil and the biomat and open new paths for liquid and air.

  4. Treat the soil

With EarthBuster Plus we can inject a liquid treatment at depth during the air shot. We use Lenzyme Field & Line Cleaner and Drainfield Biological Activator where the field calls for it, which matters most in clay.

  5. Put the yard back

No trenches, no torn-up lawn: what’s left is a pattern of small probe holes. Then the field gets time to work, and you get straight advice on keeping it working.

Drainage solutions

The EarthBuster does for a saturated yard or driveway what it does for a drain field: it re-opens clogged and compacted soil so surface water can soak in. After the probe comes out, pea gravel can go in the holes to keep them open, like a series of small French drains. Grading and gravel work round it out.

  • Grading to move water away
